Starring Bearded Iris (Iris germanica) offers drama and decadence with velvety midnight falls contrasted by crisp white standards. With smoky orange beards that make perfect landing pads for bumblebees, the striking color combo can wake up a sleepy late-spring landscape. This multiple award-winner will steal the show in the late-spring garden.
Description
(31-35“ tall x 12-24“ wide) ‘Starring‘ Bearded Iris are a garden designer’s dream, as this near-black bloom catches the attention of everyone who sees it. Plant them with Oriental Poppies, Baptisia, Allium, Salvia, and Digitalis, where their unique coloration can shine. In a rock garden, along a deck or patio, ‘Starring‘ Bearded Iris is a drought-tolerant, hardy focal point. At 31-35“ tall, its strap-like green foliage adds three seasons of interest as well. Plant in a sunny location with well-draining soil. Place the rhizomes just below the soil level in hot climates, and just above in moderate to cool climates. Water as needed while the plant establishes, lightly fertilize in spring and summer. Cut or snap off spent blooms and cut finished stems close to the base. Resilient, deer and rabbit resistant, and water-thrifty, it naturalizes well, bringing more blooms to the garden with each year.
